POWELL: ARMED SERVICES GOOD TO MINORITIES

Gen. Colin Powell, the first black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, declared Thursday that minorities have gotten a better break in the military than in the rest of society.

In an emotional defense of the all-volunteer armed services, Powell disputed the notion that minorities are bearing an unfair share of the danger in Operation Desert Storm.

Powell told the House Armed Services Committee, "I wish that there were other activities in our society and in our nation that were as open as the military is to upward mobility, to achievement, to allowing them in." - Cox News Service
