2 REAPPLY FOR SCHOOL BOARD/ CURTIS, SEIF DECIDE, BUT TURNER HASN'T

Two Roanoke School Board members whose terms end June 30 will seek reappointment, but a third has not made a final decision.

Marilyn Curtis and Velma Seif said Thursday they will apply for new three-year terms.

James M. Turner Jr., board chairman, said he has not decided yet.

"I'm giving it serious thought, but it does take a lot of time," Turner said, adding he also has to consider the demands of his construction business.

Turner is finishing his second term, having been first appointed in 1985. Curtis and Seif were appointed in 1988 and are completing their first terms.

Curtis said she will file an application in a few days. Seif said she has been busy with board matters and has not had time to apply, but she will do so. "Having been involved with school matters for so long, I feel like I want to continue [on the board]," she said.

Meanwhile, Garry Fleming, a finalist two years ago, has applied.

Fleming, 40, is an associate professor of economics at Roanoke College. He has bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Kentucky.

Fleming is vice president of the Grandin Court Elementary PTA and has been active in PTA for several years.

City Council has decided to contact neighborhood groups in an effort to seek more applications.

In the past, council used advertisements to advise residents of pending vacancies and invite applications. But Councilman James Harvey recently proposed that the city also begin notifying neighborhood organizations.

"This would help us get applications from all areas of the city. I hope we can have a large group to select from," Harvey said.

Applications will be accepted until March 11. Forms may be obtained from the city clerk's office in the Municipal Building.

Under the selection procedure, council publicly interviews up to three applicants for each seat.
