GENERAL ASSEMBLY/ FRIDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS

Private prisons: The Senate Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee approved bills to allow private prisons and juvenile detention centers, but killed a bill to authorize private local jails.

Official dance: The Senate voted 37-0 to approve a House bill designating square dancing as the state's official folk dance.

Voter registration: The House voted 64-24 to accept a Senate amendment to a House-passed bill expanding voter registration efforts. The bill originally would have allowed registration in private buildings, but the Senate limited it to apartment and condominium complexes.

Shortened session: The House met for only about 20 minutes before adjourning early so members could attend the funeral of Gertrude Prillaman Philpott, mother of Speaker A.L. Philpott, D-Bassett.
