HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

BUENA VISTA - Leslie Gray scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the decisive fourth quarter as Parry McCluer knocked Covington out of sole possession of first place in the Pioneer District with a 66-58 boys' basketball victory on Friday night.

The loss dropped the Cougars (12-5 overall, 12-3 in Pioneer) into a tie for the district lead with James River, a 55-48 winner against Glenvar.

After trailing for most of the game, Covington pulled to 51-51 in the fourth quarter, but Parry McCluer (7-11, 6-10) put the game away with a 15-7 run.

Chuck Baker added 13 points for the Fighting Blues. Tony Jeter scored 23 for Covington, and Neal Dressler added 11 points and Adaryl Twitty 10.

\ BLAND - The Rockets remained in first place in the Mountain Empire District race with the hard-fought victory against the Buffaloes.

It was an emotional game for the Rockets, who were playing their first game since the death of teammate Stephen Lindamood, who was killed in auto accident last Saturday.

Neither team led by more than seven points. Bland's Patrick Smith cashed in on seven of eight chances at the line in the fourth quarter, and David King had two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to lock up the victory.

Smith's two free throws with four seconds left gave him 1,001 points for his career. He finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Travis Munsey added 22 points and King finished with 19 for Bland (12-2, 12-2).

Floyd County (11-4, 9-4) got 22 points from Dale Marshall and 16 from Jerry Light.

\ CHRISTIANSBURG - Mickey Leonard and Dustin Harmon each made a pair of free throws in overtime to lift the Cavaliers over the Blue Demons in the New River District.

Harmon finished with 10 points and Greg Bolen put in 22 - 12 in the first quarter - to lead Carroll County (14-4, 2-2).

John Porter had 33 points for the Demons, and Eddie Bentley added 12. The Demons had a chance to win the game in the final seconds of regulation, but Bentley's shot wouldn't fall.

The Cavaliers' Jason Gallimore scored his only two points of the game in the extra period.

Odell Hodge was the only player in double figures for the Lancers (17-1, 14-1), finishing with a game-high 27. Michael Skipwith of Dan River (7-11, 6-9) nailed six 3-pointers and led his team with 22.

Martinsville (15-2, 13-2) applied a full-court press to open the second half, which forced Gretna (8-10, 6-9) out of its rhythm.

Troy Brandon had 21 points to lead Martinsville, which outscored the Hawks 39-24 in the second half.

Tracy Hall had 20 points for Gretna.

\ DRY FORK - The Bengals took advantage of a third-quarter shooting dry spell by the Trojans to register a Piedmont District victory.

Tunstall (9-8, 8-6) scored only four points in the third, and Bassett (12-5, 12-3) seized control.

Eddie Rumley and Stacy Valentine each scored 23 points to lead Bassett, which placed all five starters in double figures.

Tunstall got 20 points from Khris Law and 17 from Cecil Law.

Chatham (6-11, 6-9) outscored Fieldale-Collinsville 22-11 in the fourth quarter as Freddy Harris hit six of eight free throws and the team was 12-of-17 at the line. Tommy Rogers finished with 11.

Sims Carter led Fieldale-Collinsville (3-14, 2-13) with 17 points.

\ LEXINGTON - The Chargers made 28 of 38 from the line, including five key free throws in the final minute, to edge the Scarlet Hurricane in a Pioneer District scrap.

The score was 51-51 with 2:21 to play. A basket by Keswick Phillips with 1:23 remaining put the Chargers (9-5, 9-5) ahead for keeps.

A free throw by Tyler McCune with 24 seconds left made it 54-51, then Phillips made a one-and-one and McCune dropped in two more free throws with one second left for the final margin.

Phillips led all scorers with 23 points. Tim Williams added 12 and McCune 10 for Bath County.

Lexington (9-7, 7-7) got 18 points from Gavin Clark.

Chilhowie (7-8, 6-4) had two shots to win the game but failed to convert.

Mike Clark of PH-Glade Spring (4-11, 4-7) sank two free throws with five seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Clark led all scorers with 21 points.

Chilhowie got 13 points from Jason Fore, 12 from Patrick Brooks and 11 from Eric Sheets.

\ AUBURN - Center Mike Foutz scored 22 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the Eagles blew away the Maroon Tide in the Mountain Empire District.

Foutz scored nine points in the second quarter as Auburn (6-10, 6-8) outscored Galax 25-11 to break open a close game. Steve Barker added 16 for the Eagles, and Jeff Chandler had 14.

James Gillard had 11 to lead the Maroon Tide (4-11, 4-9), who were outscored by 19 in the fourth.

Devin Floyd paced the Blue Devils with 18 points. Clay Saunders scored 12 points to lead Rocky Gap (2-14, 1-13).

\ CASTLEWOOD - The Maroons turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and vanquished the Blue Devils in a Hogoheegee District tussle.

George Wythe (14-3, 12-1) piled it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring Castlewood 40-15.

Jeff Goff led the way for the Maroons, gunning in 31 points. Allen Green added 28 points and Chris Waddell 16 for the winners.

Castlewood (7-10, 6-6) had a balanced attack led by Chad Hicks' 19 points, but the Blue Devils were outmanned. Jerry Hall added 15 points, and William Monk and O.J. Williams had 13 apiece.

\ NEW HOPE, Pa. - Cory Alexander broke open a close game with two straight 3-point goals as the Warriors won easily.

Oak Hill (23-1) got 18 points from Thomas Burrough, 17 points and 14 rebounds from Ben Davis and 15 points and eight assists from Alexander.

Solebury School (16-5) was led by Tim Robinson with 14 points.

Solebury cut its deficit to three points midway through the third quarter, but Alexander built the lead back to nine points with two 3-pointers in a row.

\ JONESVILLE - Jimmy Collins gunned in nine 3-pointers and scored 44 points to help Lee High hand Marion its first Highlands District loss of the season.

Collins was 4-of-6 inside the 3-point arc, 9-of-16 on 3-pointers and 9-of-12 at the free-throw line. The senior's point total is believed to be a district record.

Lee (13-5, 4-2) built a 26-point second-half lead before Marion stormed back to cut the deficit to two points in the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Hurricane got no closer.

Eric Hungate scored 24, Shannon Archer 20, David Keith 15 and Martin Winters 12 for Marion (14-2, 7-1), which outscored Lee 30-14 in the fourth quarter and forced 29 turnovers in the game.

Giles (5-9, 5-9) led for the last time at 32-30 early in the third quarter. Shawsville (8-7, 7-7) took over and stretched its lead to 56-46 in the fourth quarter. The Spartans, who got 15 from Stacy Hutchison, cut it to 57-52, but couldn't get any closer.
