BLAND KEEPS FIRST IN MED

Bland remained in first place in the Mountain Empire District race Friday night with a hard-fought 83-76 boys' basketball victory against Floyd County.

It was an emotional game for the Rockets, who were playing their first game since the death of teammate Stephen Lindamood, who was killed in auto accident last Saturday.

Neither team led by more than seven points. Bland's Patrick Smith cashed in on seven of eight chances at the line in the fourth quarter, and David King had two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to lock up the victory.

Smith's two free throws with four seconds left gave him 1,001 points for his career. He finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Travis Munsey added 22 points and King finished with 19 for Bland (12-2, 12-2).
