CHIROPRACTOR DROPS QUEST FOR LICENSE

The Bedford County chiropractor convicted of defrauding Medicaid and Medicare had hoped to get his chiropractic license back, but apparently changed his mind after a hearing this week.

When Paul Heaton pleaded guilty last July to improperly billing the insurance programs for the poor and elderly at his Forest clinic, the state Board of Medicine revoked his license.

Heaton had requested that the license be reinstated, according to George Wilbur, a spokesman for the state Department of Health Professions.

After more than two hours of discussion on the matter at a board hearing Wednesday, Heaton withdrew his request, Wilbur said Friday.

"I have no idea what his reason was," said Wilbur, who was not at the hearing.

In a separate matter, Heaton also lost his license to practice nursing this week.

On Thursday, the state Board of Nursing indefinitely suspended Heaton's license as a registered nurse, Wilbur said. That board's decision was based on Heaton's two felony convictions for grand larceny and Medicaid fraud, he said.

In an unrelated hearing in Bedford earlier this week, Heaton testified that he has been earning his living selling used ski equipment since his release from the county jail.

Heaton said he also made some inquiries into selling Jacuzzis for a West Virginia distributor.
