PCS WON'T STEER TOO FAR FROM FAMILIAR FORMULA

Like many other businessmen in these war-ridden and recessionary times, Pulaski County Speedway promoter Steve McMurray plans to stand pat this year.

"We're going to be pretty conservative this year," he said. "Because of the war and the economy, we're going to stick with what we've been doing and not try a bunch of new stuff."

That means the 4/10th-mile oval again will play host to a Busch Grand National race, a NASCAR Dash race, a SMART Modifieds race, events that will be part of the Pulaski/Martinsville Challenge series, a Road to Charlotte race, and several special appearances by Winston Cup drivers.

All that will be in addition to the regular Saturday night competition involving Late Model Stock, Street Stock, Modified Mini Stock, Mini Stock and Pure Stock cars.

The regular season opens April 6.

The Grand National race, the high point of the season, will be July 27. This year, the race will be under new sponsorship by Granger Select.

It is hoped, McMurray said, that the Busch race will be televised by cable's The Nashville Network. Negotiations are continuing.

Other special events include the NASCAR Dash May 6, SMART Modifieds July 6, and the Pulaski/Martinsville Challenge 200-lap LMS races May 25 and Sept. 7.

The challenge series involves two races each at Pulaski and Martinsville Speedway. If a driver wins one race at each track, he pockets an additional $5,000. Three wins are worth a $7,500 check, and all four are worth $10,000.

There also will be three double-points races at undetermined dates.

McMurray does hope to break with past form in at least three respects. For one, he is in the process of trying to put together a cable television show that would rely heavily on highlights, news and features from the track and the Mid-Atlantic NASCAR region.

A couple of other new promotions already have been worked out. On the weekend of July 4, the track is going to sponsor a couple of outdoor concerts leading into the July 6 Modified race. There will be at least three local country music bands on July 4, and PCS and WSLQ (99 FM) will co-host a beach music concert with a number of bands.

On Aug. 10, the track is co-hosting a car show in Radford's Bisset Park with Camaro Junction, a Henry County parts store. From 1,300 to 2,000 show cars are expected to be seen, McMurray said.

"We'll fill the park up," he said.

In its fourth year of business, PCS has 256 drivers, 35 of whom are new. All the new drivers are in the Late Model and Pure Stock categories.
