FRIES - Marvin M. Alford, age 84, of Route 1, Fries, passed away February 9, 1991. He was the son of the late George W. and Coara Guynn Alford of Carroll County, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Opal Smythers Alford of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dr. E.M. Litz of Bluefield, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Courtney Litz of Bluefield, Va. and Paige Litz of Smith College, Northampton, Mass.; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Macie Alford, Austinville; Mrs. Edna Alford, Hillsville; Mrs. Pearl Alford, Princeton, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews; two special friends, James Goad, Hillsville; and Grover Carter, Woodlawn. Mr. Alford was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Poole Alford. He was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, Austinville. The Alford Brothers General Store of Poplar Camp was a forty-two year partnership of he and his brother, the late Kent Alford. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax. Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to the Fries Rescue Squad.
