DUKE FLOODS TERPS IN SECOND HALF

Reserve Thomas Hill keyed a second-half rally as No. 6 Duke downed Maryland 101-81 in an Atlantic Coast Conference basketball game Saturday.

The conference-leading Blue Devils (20-4 overall, 8-2 ACC) reached the 20-victory plateau for the eighth straight season, but it wasn't easy at first. Duke trailed by seven points with seven minutes left in the opening half - a 13-minute span in which it turned the ball over 17 times.

But the Blue Devils, who made seven of nine 3-pointers in the first half, pounded the ball inside early in the second to take advantage of Maryland's foul trouble and shot 62.9 percent.

The Terrapins (12-10, 2-7) cut Duke's 44-39 halftime lead to three points on Matt Roe's basket to open the second half, but the Blue Devils went on a 20-7 run over a 3 1/2-minute span and never trailed again.

Christian Laettner started the surge with two inside baskets and Hill, averaging nearly 15 points off the bench in seven ACC games, added two three-point plays and a 12-footer during the spurt for a 64-48 lead with 16:01 left.

Maryland closed to 65-55 less than three minutes later on a basket by Cedric Lewis, but never got closer.

Lewis, the second-leading shot blocker in the nation at 5.5 per game, picked up his third foul with 6:27 left in the first half and wasn't much of a factor inside.

Laettner led six Duke players in double figures with 16 points. Hill and Billy McCaffrey added 14 each, Greg Koubek 13, Bobby Hurley 12 and Grant Hill 11.

Vince Broadnax led the Terrapins with 18 points. Garfield Smith added 16, Matt Roe 12 and Lewis 11.

Duke, which beat No. 11 Virginia at home on Thursday, is 12-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season and plays host to No. 19 Louisiana State today.
