UTC THROTTLES KEYDETS 101-73

Keith Nelson scored 27 points as Tennessee-Chattanooga beat VMI 101-73 Saturday in a Southern Conference basketball game.

VMI (9-13 overall, 3-5 SC) led 28-19 before Tennessee-Chattanooga (15-8, 8-2) went on a 16-0 run, capped by Nelson's two free throws that gave the Moccasins a 35-28 lead with 6:07 left.

The Keydets were plagued by early foul trouble. Starters Greg Fittz, Percy Covington and Lewis Preston each went to the bench with two fouls in the first nine minutes of the game.

The Moccasins stretched their lead to 51-38 at halftime. VMI closed to 59-53 with 14:54 remaining on a layup by Jonathan Penn, but Tennessee-Chattanooga outscored the Keydets 9-0, ending with Tyrone Enoch's layup for a 68-53 lead with 12:36 left.

"UTC played extremely well," VMI coach Joe Cantafio said. "Nelson killed us in the post, but Enoch was the difference. He was able to run around our pressure."

Eric Spivey added 19 points for Tennessee-Chattanooga. Derrick Kirce had 17 points and Enoch finished with 11.

VMI was led by Erek Perry's 18 points. Penn had 13.
