REBELS BEATEN IN FINAL SECONDS

Brian Martin scored off his own rebound with three seconds left to lift the Hampton Roads Admirals over Roanoke Valley 6-5 in an East Coast Hockey League game Saturday night.

The victory increased the Admirals' lead to four points over second-place Johnstown with a game in hand. The Rebels, battling for a playoff spot, remained in fourth, one point ahead of last-place Erie.

Roanoke Valley, down by five goals after a two-goal Admirals burst in the first minute of the second period, made it 5-5 with 3:11 to play on a fluke goal credited to Marco Fuster. Rob Wilson's centering pass from the left corner bounced off one of Fuster's skates and went between the legs of Admirals goalie Mark Bernard.

Rick Boyd triggered the winning sequence by shooting the puck into the Rebels' zone with 15 seconds left. McEwen took the first shot from the right circle and the puck bounced off a Roanoke Valley defender and into the air.

Martin grabbed it with his hand, set it down and shot. Meanwhile, McEwen continued around the net. As the puck came back to Martin, McEwen emerged again and collided with goalie Bill Horn.

That gave Martin the opening he needed for his 53rd goal of the season and second of the game.

It was a dramatic ending to a bitterly played game in front of a sellout crowd of 8,912.

There were 144 penalty minutes, including 68 in a major altercation involving seven players with 1:07 remaining. The Admirals' Harry Mews and the Rebels' Ron Jones received game misconducts.
