NOTED PHOTOGRAPHER AARON SISKIND DIES

Aaron Siskind, who helped transform photography into an art form with stark, black-and-white close-ups, has died at age 87.

Siskind died Friday at Miriam Hospital. He had suffered a stroke Thursday at his home, said a friend, Judith Jacobs.

A native of New York City, Siskind gave up a job as a public school English teacher to take up a career as a documentary photographer in the early 1930s.

He made his mark and established his reputation in the 1940s and 1950s when he moved into what then was the revolutionary work of an abstract photographer.
