Hampton Roads' entry into the competition for 17 high school seniors, got a surprise visit from her father, Air Force Maj. James Ballengee, who arrived in Roanoke before the event. He previously had been kept busy in Saudi Arabia, flying sorties as part of the allied forces fighting Iraq.
Jane Johnson, an official with the event, said Ballengee wasn't aware that her father had flown in to see her compete until after her performance.
For winning, Meade gets a $4,000 college scholarship, plus assorted prizes and a trip to America's Young Woman of the Year competition.
The entrants are judged in a variety of areas, including academics, creative and performing arts, and fitness.
The second runner-up in the two-night event was Anita Hoback of Vinton. Jennifer Turner of Martinsville-Henry County was third runner-up, and the fourth runner-up was Kristen Evans of Arlington.

Presence/composure: Anita Hoback, Vinton.
Creative and performing arts: Kellie McClung, Chesapeake.
Panel evaluation: Jennifer Turner, Martinsville-Henry County.
Scholastic achievement: Kristen Evans, Arlington.
Coca-Cola Spirit Award: Anita Hoback, Vinton.
