The church was built in 1898-1900 and served the largest black congregation in the Roanoke Valley and the largest Baptist congregation west of Richmond until the mid-20th century. Its pastor, the Rev. Arthur James, instituted a monthly newspaper and a weekly radio broadcast.
The First Baptist congregation moved to a new building in 1982. Plans are under way to rehabilitate the old church building for use by the Acting Company and the League of Roanoke Artists.
The Greer House, also known as the "1861 House," was the home of Dr. Thomas Bailey Greer. Construction began on it in 1861, but was not completed until after the Civil War.
Ricky Mullen and Jacki Lucki have joined Waldrop Realty. Both are newly licensed agents. Mullen is a Roanoke native. Lucki previously worked in the Charlotte area, where she was vice present of the Central Charlotte Division of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association's home show is scheduled for March 22-24 at the Salem Civic Center. Booth reservations are currently being booked for the show, Better Living Expo '91, which will have a general admission charge of $2.
