DONLAN QUITS NFL MANAGEMENT COUNCIL

Jack Donlan, executive director of the NFL Management Council for the past 10 years, has submitted his resignation, apparently unhappy about an owners' move to curb his organization's power.

NFL spokesman Joe Browne confirmed that commissioner Paul Tagliabue already has begun looking for a replacement for the man who guided the NFL's negotiating team through player strikes in 1982 and '87.

New York Newsday reported that Donlan stepped down because of a structural change approved by NFL owners at a meeting Nov. 14 in Dallas that stripped the management council of its autonomous status and placed it under the authority of the commissioner.
