FREEDOM FROM SENSELESS LAWS

"THERE OUGHTA be a law." I challenge anyone to have a political conversation without hearing this. It is one of the most socialistic phrases used in this country.

Our forefathers came to this land and founded this country on the concept of freedom. And what is freedom? It is freedom from senseless laws. However, there seems to be a growing number of bleeding heart do-gooders determined to take away our freedom and turn us into a socialist state where we are no longer free to choose and are no longer responsible for ourselves.

I can hear some of you now: "What is this idiot talking about? We are free!" Are we? When did I ask anyone to save me from myself? It is my right to choose whether I use my seat belt in my car. If by chance I am killed in an accident, then it is my fault. If the accident is not my fault I still chose, knowing full well the consequences.

This is freedom. Either way, my actions did not violate anyone else's rights. However, the seat-belt law takes away my right to choose. STEVEN R. BROWN SALEM
