CHOLERA EPIDEMIC LIKELY TO SPREAD, WHO SAYS

A senior World Health Organization official said Monday a cholera outbreak that has claimed 51 lives in Peru since January is likely to spread to neighboring Latin American countries.

Dr. Nathaniel F. Pierce, of the WHO's division of diarrheal disease control, said it marked this century's first major outbreak of cholera in the Western Hemisphere.

The nations bordering Peru - Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Ecuador - have taken precautions including banning importation of Peruvian food products and requiring vaccination for travelers leaving Peru. - Associated Press
