TEEN SERIOUSLY HURT WHEN STRUCK ON HEAD

A 19-year-old Roanoke man was in very serious condition Monday after being hit on the head with a stick following a fight at the Jamestown housing project.

Witnesses told police they found Kenneth Wayne Draper of the 1600 block of Queen Ann Drive lying face down in a pool of blood in his apartment around 4 a.m.

Police gave this account:

Draper had been in a fight with several people, including Joseph Howard Elkins, 19, of the 1700 block of Wise Avenue Southeast. As Draper ran into his apartment, the group started pelting the building.

Draper opened the door and was hit on the left side of the head by some sort of stick. He underwent surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for a possible fractured skull.

Elkins, who was charged with malicious wounding, was in the Roanoke jail late Sunday.

Police found knives and broken sticks in the area where the fight took place. They said two other people were arrested there and charged with being drunk in public.
