THREE MEN HELD IN BOMB ATTEMPT

Three men were ordered held Monday for further questioning and hearings in an alleged conspiracy to blow up chemical tanks in Virginia near the world's largest U.S. Navy base for insurance money.

A U.S. magistrate in Phoenix ordered Cecil Ross and Joseph Wayne Openshaw held pending a Friday preliminary hearing and further questioning by federal agents.

In Norfolk, Va., a federal magistrate ordered Charles Edward Gresham held for a Wednesday detention hearing.

The three are charged with conspiracy to commit a bombing to further a wire-fraud and mail-fraud scheme in the Feb. 4 placement in Norfolk of six pipe bombs on two tanks, including one that contained volatile methanol.
