GENERAL ASSEMBLY

School uniforms: The Senate voted 20-16 to approve a bill that would allow local school systems to adopt uniforms for students.

Budget amendments: The House and Senate rejected each other's amendments to the 1990-92 budget. Democrats Alan Diamonstein, Robert Ball and Earl Dickinson were appointed as House representatives to a conference committee that will work out differences between the two chambers' budget proposals.

Guns and minors: The House Militia and Police Committee heard from supporters and opponents of a bill making it a crime to recklessly leave a loaded gun in reach of a child younger than 15, but postponed voting on the bill for a week.

Making his point: Del. George Grayson, D-Williamsburg, brandished a sword on the House floor as he told his colleagues that the proposed eight-day furlough of state workers is like a sword in the hand of a surgeon - "awkward, unwieldy, crude and menacing."

Insurance and banks: The Senate voted 26-2 with five abstentions to adopt technical amendments to a bill that would allow banks to sell insurance.

Nursing scholarship: The Senate voted 37-0 to approve a bill that would add $1 to nursing license fees to pay for a nursing scholarship fund.

Jet ski ban: The Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee unanimously approved a bill to ban children younger than 14 from operating jet skis.
