WORKER PAY LOWER THAN RAILROAD SAYS

GREG Edwards' news article Jan. 17 was very good. The only problem I had was with the paragraph on average wages in the railroad industry.

The shop-craft employees make $14.11 per hour. That computes to less than $28,000 per year for skilled workers, machinists, electricians, pipe fitters and boilermakers/welders. That is a long way from the $42,809 average in the article.

After you throw in Arnold McKinnon's $1.5 million and the vice presidents who make in excess of $100,000 each, plus bonuses, the average could possibly reach $42,809. However, my figures are more realistic than the railroad's.

The shop-craft employees make less than any other employees on the railroad. Even if the emergency board's suggested settlement is agreed to or forced into law by Congress, the shop-craft employees will still make below $30,000 per year. THOMAS W.
