Barbara Lee Bishop, age 52, passed away at her Farmville home on Monday, February 11. She was the daughter of Mary Harris Bishop and the late Robert G. Bishop, of Roanoke. Also surviving are an aunt, Margaret Obenshain Ester; and a first cousin, Carolyn Obenshain, both of Florida. Miss Bishop was a member of the Longwood College Art Faculty from 1965 to 1990 and served as chairman of the department from 1970 to 1984. She received her B.S. degree from Longwood College and was named "Who's Who Among American College and University Students" in 1961; in 1965, Outstanding Young Women of America; and in 1971, "Outstanding Educators of America" as well as "Outstanding Young Women of America". She received her M.F.A. degree in painting and graphics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and also studied at the American Center for Students and Artists in Paris and at the Teacher's College at Columbia University. Miss Bishop's professional contributions included serving as President of the Virginia Art Educators Association, Secretary of the Virginia Alliance for Arts Education, Vice-President and Art Editor of the New Virginia Review, and as a member of various committees for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She served as the first Executive Director of the Longwood College Fine Arts Center. Miss Bishop's works had been exhibited in more than 80 juried and invitational shows on state, regional, and national levels, as well as in 29 one-woman shows, and are represented in public and private collections throughout the United States. She conducted workshops in printmaking, photography, and papermaking for colleges, universities, and schools in Va., N.C., and Penn. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 13, at 3:00 p.m. at the Oakey Funeral Home of Roanoke. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, February 17, in Bedford Auditorium at Longwood College at 7:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Longwood College Foundation in memory of Miss Bishop.
