BUTLER QUITS CITY BOARD FOR STATE POST

Wendell Butler, chairman of the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners, has resigned to become a member of the Virginia Water Control Board.

Butler, former vice mayor and chairman of the Roanoke School Board, has been on the authority's board for seven years and has been chairman for five years.

He told the board Monday that he regrets leaving, but he has agreed to accept an appointment by Gov. Douglas Wilder to the board that oversees water control and pollution issues in the state.

Butler said he has not lost his interest in affordable, decent and safe housing for city residents.

"Congratulations, but you are going to be sorely missed," said Hallie Albergotti, vice chairwoman of the board.

Butler, a dentist, served on City Council from 1980 to 1984. He was also vice mayor from 1980 to 1982.

Butler served on the School Board for 10 years, including several years as chairman, before he won a council seat.
