Roger Dale Anderson of Route 2, Rocky Mount, was pronounced dead at Franklin Memorial Hospital, according to officer James Wright of the Rocky Mount Police Department.
Anderson was working in an area by himself at the Ferguson Land & Lumber Co., and no one saw the accident occur, Wright said. The victim was found between 10:45 and 11 a.m. pinned beneath some lumber.
Wright said it appeared that Anderson had climbed off his forklift and was preparing wood for stacking when the forklift rolled forward, pinning him against the lumber.
Authorities estimate he was pinned for 15 to 30 minutes before his body was found.
Wright said that Anderson had worked at the lumberyard since November and was an experienced forklift operator. The state Department of Labor and Industry was notified of the accident, Wright said.
