This week, Stewartsville area Supervisor Dale Wheeler asked that the gross receipts tax be considered instead of a merchant's capital tax now imposed on area businesses.
That tax brings in less than $80,000 a year for the county. County officials say they are unsure how much could be raised with a tax on gross receipts.
Forest Supervisor T.D. Thornton agreed that such a tax should be studied. "The time has come that we do look," Thornton said. "It can be a fair and equitable means of taxation."
