BARBARA BISHOP, ARTIST, TEACHER, DIES AT AGE 52

Barbara L. Bishop, a nationally recognized artist who was a native of Roanoke, died Monday. She was 52.

Bishop, who served for 25 years on the faculty of Longwood College, Bishop was the daughter of Mrs. Mary Harris Bishop of Roanoke.

She was chairwoman of the college's art department from 1970 to 1984. She began teaching at Longwood in 1965, five years after she graduated from the school. She was the first executive director of the Longwood College Fine Arts Center.

She also served as president of the Virginia Art Education Association, secretary of the Virginia Alliance for Arts Education, and vice president and art editor of the New Virginia Review. She worked on various committees for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

As an artist, Bishop received wide acclaim and exhibited her oil paintings, prints and drawings in one-person shows and juried art exhibits throughout the East and in Alaska. Her work was also represented in public and private art collections in at least 10 states.

In mid-1970s, a Roanoke Times & World-News art columnist made the following observation about one of Bishop's prints:

"The viewer, though acutely aware of the exquisite photography, fine draftmanship and other delicate surface work, finds a deeper meaning - a spiritual quality - a message more sacred than secular . . . Barbara Bishop makes her ideas and feelings accessible through these elegant creations - an act of generosity."
