LAWYER ON PROBATION IN PATRICK TAX CASE

A Patrick County lawyer who admitted last year that he failed to file income tax returns was sentenced Tuesday to three years probation.

Arthur A. Anthony III, of Stuart, had pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to report a total of $116,971 in income for 1984 and 1987.

As a condition of probation, U.S. Judge James Turk ordered Anthony to file his individual income tax returns for 1979 through 1987 within 90 days.

Turk also ordered Anthony to perform 200 hours of community service.

Under tax law, people convicted of criminal tax offenses are required to pay the tax due, with interest and civil penalties that may be assessed, in addition to whatever criminal sentence is imposed.
