The Knights (13-5 overall, 13-3 district) lead the Pioneer by one game over Covington with two games left. Natural Bridge, led by Robert Thompson's school-record 14 assists, upset the Cougars 68-65.
James River got 20 points from Derek Jones and 17 points from Melvin Christian. Jones had seven and Christian six in the third quarter when James River, helped by a switch to man-to-man defense, extended a two-point halftime lead to 13 going into the fourth quarter.
Nine of Jones' points came on 3-pointers.
Ryan Shotwell had nine points and eight assists for the Knights. Jones and Christian combined to go 13-of-13 from the free-throw line.
The victory was the 399th in Knights coach John Shotwell's career. He'll go for No. 400 Friday at Covington.

Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field, but the Highlanders (11-6, 11-5) outrebounded the Chargers 30-15 and made 26 of 30 free throws.
Chad Willis added 13 for Glenvar. Keswick Phillips led Bath County (9-6, 9-6) with 14. Tim Williams added 12, Don Ryder 11 and Lee Waldeck 10.

\ Cave Spring 80 Franklin County 63 Mike Fayed scored 23 points, including 11 in a 33-16 second-quarter burst that led the Knights to the Roanoke Valley District blowout.
Cave Spring (11-7, 4-2) led 14-6 after one quarter, but Fayed sparked the second-quarter surge that put the Eagles (1-15, 0-5) under. Second-chance scoring opportunities by Cave Spring and Franklin County's own cold shooting (6-of-26) in the first half was the difference in the Knights' 47-22 halftime lead.
Jeremy Blackstock scored 12 points and Baker Doughty 10 for the Knights. Steve Reynolds led Franklin County with 12, followed by Kenny Wade and Josh Underwood with 11 each.

\ Salem 76 William Byrd 63 Corey Epperly scored 26 points for visiting Salem as the Spartans collected their second Blue Ridge District victory of the season - both against the Terriers.
Salem led throughout, although Byrd cut the deficit to 55-54 late in the third quarter. The Spartans preserved their lead with some ferocious rebounding; they had 15 offensive rebounds and outrebounded Byrd for the game, 35-31.
John Smith scored 20 points to lead Byrd (7-10, 0-6), which was plagued by 26 turnovers. Jay Sandy had 17 points for Salem (6-11, 2-4). The Spartans had 19 turnovers.

\ Roanoke Valley Christian and Roanoke Catholic advanced to the semifinals with first-round victories at Roanoke Valley Christian.
The Eagles (13-9) had no trouble with Holy Cross, cruising to a 52-22 victory. Danae Wegner led RVC with 13 points.
Catholic used a late surge to knock off Stuart Hall 31-17. The Celtics (16-4) made only 14 of 45 shots (31.1 percent), but scored the last 12 points of the game. In a game in which only seven people scored, Jackie Hinman led the Celtics with 10 points.
North Cross ran into top-ranked Lynchburg Christian Academy and fell 51-21. Jenni DeSaegher led the LCA attack with 13 points.
Roanoke Valley Christian will face LCA in the semifinals at Timberlake. Roanoke Catholic will play Timberlake Christian.
