BASSETT UPSETS MARTINSVILLE IN PIEDMONT CLASH

Adam Varner scored 17 points and Bassett upset third-ranked Martinsville 58-55 in an important Piedmont District basketball game Tuesday night.

It was Bassett's first victory in six games over a Group AA top 10 team this season.

The Bengals (13-5 overall, 13-3 Piedmont) sealed their victory by connecting on 10 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter. Dytanyon Norman scored half of his points on the free-throw in the fourth, making four of five. Ronnie Turner was 5-of-7 in the quarter and ended the game with 11 points.

For Martinsville (15-3, 13-3), the Brandons carried the load in the fourth quarter, combining for 13 of the Bulldogs' 18 points. Troy Brandon led Martinsville with 17 points and Carl Brandon chipped in 14.

The Bulldogs had a chance to tie the score at the buzzer, but Maurice Spencer's 3-point attempt bounced off the rim as time expired.

Eddie Rumley chipped in 12 points for Bassett, which pulled into a second-place tie with Martinsville in the Piedmont.

\ George Wythe 76 Chilhowie 61 It didn't take long for George Wythe to settle into its new district home.

With the victory against Chilhowie, the Maroons clinched the regular-season district championship in their first season of play in the Hogoheegee District.

Chris Waddell made five of seven 3-point attempts and finished with a game-high 23 points for George Wythe (15-3, 13-1). Waddell sank three 3-pointers in the third quarter, in which George Wythe outscored the Warriors 28-19.

Allen Green finished with 18 points, 11 in the third quarter. Jeff Goff added 16.

Scott Barker led Chilhowie (7-9, 6-5) with 20 points.

\ Natural Bridge 68 Covington 65 Robert Thompson had a school-record 14 assists as the Rockets upset the Cougars and knocked them out of a first-place tie with James River, which beat Craig County 71-56, for the Pioneer District lead.

Thompson also made a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left to put the Rockets (7-10, 7-8) up 66-63 and made a stickback by Covington's Neal Dressler with 13 seconds left meaningless. Jason Knick's two free throws nine seconds later clinched the victory.

Thompson also had tied the score at 63 with 1:10 left after the Cougars (12-6, 12-4) had taken a lead on a basket by Everett Hughes with 1:22 left.

Four scorers, two for each team, had a game-high 21 points. Marty Early and Joey Carter did it for Natural Bridge; Tony Jeter and Adaryl Twitty did it for Covington.

The Cougars have a chance to regain a tie for the lead when they play host to James River Friday.

\ Rockbridge 59 Parry McCluer 57 Junior guard William Sensabaugh drained a 3-pointer with 1:15 left to cap a sensational shooting performance and lift the Rebels to the come-from-behind Pioneer District victory against the Fighting Blues.

Sensabaugh, who entered the game averaging 12 points, canned a school-record eight 3-point baskets en route to 27 second-half points.

Parry McCluer (7-12, 6-11), which held a 36-21 halftime cushion before Sensabaugh's scoring run, was paced by Chuck Baker's 16 points. Leslie Gray and Andy Michaels added 14 points for Rockbridge (7-11, 6-10).

\ Laurel Park 82 Patrick County 44 Laurel Park started five seniors, only one of whom normally starts, so the Lancers' 11-8 margin over the winless Cougars should not have alarmed anybody.

Odell Hodge, Lemont Wells and Co. hit full stride in the second quarter and Laurel Park never looked back in raising its record to 17-1 overall, 15-1 in the Piedmont District. Patrick County is 0-17, 0-15.

Hodge led all scorers with 23 points and Wells finished with 18. Scott Clifton led Patrick County with 17.
