GAS-TAX HIKE WOULD HIT LOWER INCOMES

RECENT editorials have suggested a 50-cent raise in the gas tax. Perhaps this would accomplish some of the things you mention, but I doubt it. Our government has a fantastic way of spending any amount of money it can get.

Have you considered who, basically, is driving the bigger cars and the older cars that get less gas mileage? It is usually the people who have lower incomes. They are who would be penalized the most with your 50-cent increase in gas tax.

All of us would pay a lot more, not only for our own gas but also for all goods shipped by truck. And I think a lot of us would think twice about hopping out to the shopping centers as often as we do, if it were going to cost us a bunch extra on our gas. JOHN D. COCHRAN TROUTVILLE
