IRS FILES $5 BILLION CLAIM AGAINST DREXEL

The Internal Revenue Service filed a claim for more than $5 billion Wednesday against Drexel Burnham Lambert Inc. for back taxes, interest and penalties. Tax experts in Washington said the claim ranked among the largest ever filed.

The action came a year after Drexel and its subsidiary companies filed for bankruptcy. It brings to more than $16 billion the total of federal claims against the company, which has pleaded guilty to securities violations and other charges. - The New York Times
