GERMAN MINISTER SAYS SYRIA WILL ACCEPT ISRAEL

Germany's foreign minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, announced Wednesday that Syria was ready to recognize Israel's right to exist as part of a postwar settlement.

But Syrian leaders quickly issued statements suggesting there had been no change. Israeli officials were skeptical of the report.

Genscher met for more than two hours with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa. He said Syria agreed that if Palestinians were given the right of self determination, that would mean "Israel's right to exist is recognized and secured." - Associated Press
