The symposium is sponsorsed by the Virginia Community Colleges Association.
Participants will include Irina Novikova, head of the English language department at an institution of higher education in Yaroslavl, U.S.S.R., and Alexander Kegeles, treasurer of a construction corporation located in the same town.
The opening session at 9 a.m. will focus on the educational system and role of language education in the Soviet Union. A session at 1 p.m. will deal with economic changes in the Soviet business community.
A public potluck supper will be held at 5 p.m. People should bring enough food for their use and a bit extra for the guests.
"The purpose of this dinner is to welcome our Soviet visitors and show them good friendly Southwest Virginia hospitality," said Neil F. Murphy, symposium coordinator.
Round table discussions will be held for a half day Feb. 20.
There is no charge to attend all or part of the two-day program, but people are requested to register by telephoning Murphy before the symposium (628-6094 in Washington County, 466-3444 in Bristol or 783-6645 in Smyth County) so seating and refreshments can be provided.
