CARROLL COUNTY SEEKS FARM MARKET MONEY

Carroll County is seeking $500,000 each from the Appalachian Regional Commission and Farmers Home Administration to establish a Southwest Virginia Farmers Market near Hillsville.

The Hillsville site was the choice of a state committee and ground was broken on the project more than a year ago, but the state's budget shortfall has blocked construction.

Last year the county Board of Supervisors voted to free the tract for other development if an opportunity to use it came along before state farmers market funding. Grants from the two federal agencies, if they are approved, would allow the farmers market to proceed.

The applications have been endorsed by the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission.
