MINER KILLED, THREE MISSING IN LEE COUNTY

One miner was killed and three others were missing in an accident at a Lee County coal mine Wednesday, according to state and mine officials.

Officials at the LJ Coal Corp. mine in the Pucketts Creek area said a massive roof fall occurred between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Harry Childress, chief of the state Division of Mines, said his office was notified of the accident about 5 p.m. He said inspectors at the scene told him the roof fall was as large as 20 feet wide and 100 feet long.

Four people apparently were trapped, he said. Rescuers "reached one person and they have confirmed it's fatal," Childress said Wednesday evening. "They have not recovered him. We still have three unaccounted for."

The names of the miners were not known, Childress said.
