IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE A MARRIAGE

IN RESPONSE to Gudrun Freeman's letter of Jan. 24, I'm sure her statistics are accurate that after divorce, a man's standard of living goes up, while a woman's declines. But I submit that there is a reason: Perhaps that man is at last happy and can be productive, and perhaps she never was.

It takes two to make a marriage and make a child, and it takes two to make a marriage fail. Why should a woman be compensated for her failure?

I agree with Gudrun that a parent, be it man or woman, should bear the financial responsibility for offspring; and moreover, both parents should put their children's mental and emotional well-being before their personal differences. CATHY L. LEVINE ROANOKE
