FIRST LADY SHOWS AIR TRAVEL SAFE/ ACTOR IN ANTI-WAR PROTEST ARRESTED

Barbara Bush arrived on a commercial flight today, shunning her usual government plane, to show the American public "I'm not afraid to fly" and that air travel is still safe.

The first lady said she and President Bush had discussed the fact that air travel was dramatically down, apparently due to concerns about possible terrorism since the start of the Persian Gulf War.

Barbara Bush, referring to talk of possible anti-U.S. terrorism, said, "I'm not going to be held hostage by this at all."

On another matter, she said she and the president have talked about the problem of military families in which both parents are serving in the Persian Gulf War and have children at home.

Barbara Bush was to visit a veterans hospital in Indianapolis and an Air Force base in Peru, Ind.

Before departing, she played with an electronic dictionary-thesaurus that she said was a Valentine's Day gift from her husband. She said the president had left the electronic gadget in the car along with a valentine message that said "I love ya."

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, actor Martin Sheen was arrested after pouring human blood on the steps of the Federal Building during an anti-war protest.

Sheen and protester Valerie Sklarevsky were arrested Wednesday after they emptied a bag of ashes and a baby bottle filled with human blood near the building's entrance. Both were cited for defacing government property and released. The violation carries a $50 fine or 10 days in jail.

"The reason we're doing it is to bring the war home," said Mary Wehrli, a protest organizer.

"We have not seen blood on the television. We have not seen the ashes and limbs of babies who have been bombed."
