BUCHANAN COUNCIL OKS RECYCLING CENTER LOCATION

Despite repeated opposition from several citizens, the Buchanan Town Council on Monday approved a proposed recycling center in the south end of town.

Zoning Administrator Jesse Jones said he sees no problem with the proposed location for the center, despite concerns from members of Valley View Baptist Church that the center would pose traffic and health problems and interfer with a proposed day-care center.

"I've never seen a landfill that anybody ever approved of either," Jones said. "However, this is something we have to have."

Robert Cash, the town's garbage collector, had asked council for its approval when he applied for a business license in December although council didn't need to approve the site. The area already is zoned for business.

Mayor C.D. Barger Jr. said council held hearings on the location because there was opposition and council wanted everyone to have a say.

In other business, council:

Learned that flags were being stolen off poles in front of a church and a couple of businesses. Police Officer Mike St. Clair said several citizens had expressed their concern over the thefts.

Went into executive session to discuss personnel matters. A motion was made that town personnels' salaries stay the same for the remainder of 1991.

Appointed Gracie Mabry to the town's planning commission to fill the vacancy created when Rex Kelly became a council member in December.

Announced that it had hired Rodney Trail as water/sewer maintenance assistant for the treatment plant.

Heard, in a monthly update on the sewer treatment plant from Al Frazier of Clean Water Engineers, Inc. that the project is 53.7 percent complete.
