POLL: MOST FAVOR LONGER AIR WAR

While resigned that ground combat against Iraq will probably be necessary, the American public overwhelmingly prefers that bombing from the air continue for the next few weeks.

That preference did not appear to change much as a result of the storm this week over the Iraqi civilians killed in a Baghdad building hit by allied bombs, the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll shows.

While 71 percent expected a ground war would eventually be necessary, 79 percent wanted to continue the air campaign for weeks.
