CREDIT UNION LEAGUE OPPOSES GROUPING

The Virginia Credit Union League said Thursday it has collected signatures from 150,000 members opposing proposed federal legislation that would consolidate supervision and insurance of all financial institutions.

About 11,500 of the signers are members of credit unions in the Sixth Congressional District, according to league spokesman Michael Hilling.

Members of area credit unions will travel to Washington, D.C., for a Feb. 28 national rally against the pending legislation. They also will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Salem Civic Center with representatives of Sens. Charles Robb and John Warner and Rep. James Olin, Hilling said.

The legislation pending in Congress would lump banks, thrifts and credit unions for purposes of federal regulation and insurance. - Staff report
