MAMMOTH JURY AWARDS INCREASED LAST YEAR

Juries doled out more than $500 million in the nation's 10 largest civil lawsuit awards in 1990, a $25 million increase from 1989 that signals little success for efforts to trim mammoth court awards.

The top 10 awards each were worth $30 million or more and the number of personal injury verdicts over $1 million peaked at more than 600, Lawyers Alert magazine said in its Feb. 18 issue.

The jump showed national efforts to limit lawsuit damages may have failed completely, Lawyers Alert publisher Larry Bodine said.
