A 30-mile stretch of Virginia 42 in Giles and Craig counties was recently designated as a Virginia Byway by the state Department of Transportation.

The byway begins at Virginia 311 in New Castle and ends at U.S. 460 near Newport.

Byways are named through the cooperation of the transportation department and the state Department of Conservation and Recreation. Areas containing historical, scenic or recreational value are eligible. The Roanoke Times & World-News cor-rects errors in its news columns that come to its attention.
