"A key factor in the education of anyone in this complex, modern world is an understanding of the humanities," said President Floyd Hogue. "We're confident that this project will help us strengthen this component of the educational experience for all of our students."
The project is sponsored by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges to enhance existing humanities programs and incorporate the humanities more fully into other programs.
New River's project is being directed by Elaine Montjoy, professor of English; Samuel Olorounto, associate professor of English, and Douglas Warren, dean of instruction and student services.
They recently met with representatives of national associations and teams from other participating colleges in Atlanta, where the national project was formally launched.
The project will involve a mentor from another institution and special activities for curriculum and faculty development in humanities.
