STRANGE ALLIES/ WILDER'S GOP CARD

GOP legislators say they'll support Gov. Wilder if he vetoes spending bills put to him by the Democrat-dominated General Assembly.

"You may count on Republican support to sustain your line-item vetoes," wrote the leaders of the Joint Republican Caucus in a letter to Wilder.

A similar letter has not been forthcoming from the Democratic legislators' caucus.

It would be nice if the GOP's new enthusiasm for the governor's budget policies represents recognition, finally, that Virginia has in Doug Wilder a fiscally conservative leader who is taking steps that Republicans can hardly in good faith repudiate.

"Politics is said to make for strange alliances," the GOP letter observes.

That's not precisely the expression, but Republicans can't be expected to embrace the governor too closely.
