HAMPTON MAN ACCUSED OF PRINTING COUNTERFEIT MONEY

A Hampton man alleged to be the printer for a counterfeiting ring that ran off nearly $4 million in bogus money has been arrested by Secret Service agents.

Roy Lee Davis, 44, was taken into custody Thursday at a used-car business he operates, Davis Motors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Harvey L. Bryant said printing equipment, including a press and camera, was found at his home.

A federal grand jury indictment charges Davis and three others with printing counterfeit money, much of which was found buried in five locations in Isle of Wight County.

Charged with Davis were Gerald Wayne Sturgill, 47, and Michael Jesse Waltz, 35. They were arrested in January. The fourth man, Dennis Ray Curry, 25, of Smithfield, apparently has fled the area, authorities said.

Davis, Sturgill and Waltz have been ordered to appear for arraignment on Feb. 27.

Bryant said most of the bogus money has been recovered.
