Dow Scott, a professor at Virginia Tech and member of the Rock and Road Riders, said the club is giving the award because they want the community to know how courteous and positive the bus drivers are toward the cyclists.
Mike Connelly, transit manager, said he was pleased when he found out about the award.
"Because this is a university town, and there are a lot of cyclists, our drivers are very aware of bicycles," he said.
Watching out for cyclists is often the topic of conversation at monthly safety meetings of bus drivers, Connelly said. They are told never to assume a cyclists will obey all traffic rules.
Connelly said several drivers are cyclists themselves and are conscientious when it comes to sharing the road with a biker.
The Rock and Road Riders plan to give awards for other groups or individuals. This is the first award the club has given.
