MARSHALL HITS 1,000 FOR FLOYD

FLOYD - Travis Crawford scored 26 points to lead Floyd County past Giles 75-67 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball game Friday night.

Floyd senior center Dale Marshall had 17 points to put him over 1,000 in his three-year varsity career. He has 1,005.

Floyd, which led by 20 in the third quarter, improved to 14-4 overall and 12-4 in the district. Giles is 5-11 and 5-11.

Eddie Adams and Brent Rampey led Giles with 22 points each, and Stacy Hutchinson had 15.

\ AUBURN - Patrick Smith had a big game as the Rockets clinched a tie for the Mountain Empire District regular-season title.

Smith made eight of 14 shots in the game and was 12-of-12 from the free-throw line - all in the second half - to finish with 31 points for Bland (14-2, 14-2). Jay Meadows had 12 and Travis Munsey 11.

Mike Foutz led the Eagles (6-12, 6-10) with 18 points, followed by Grady Phillips with 13 and Brian Sale 12.

\ Gateway Christian started fast and made free throws down the stretch to protect a first-round victory in the Southwest Region of the Old Dominion Association of Church Schools.

The Crusaders (13-7) began the game with a 12-2 run and finished by making eight of 10 free throws in the final three minutes. Eighth-grader Matt Linkous led the way with 22 points and point guard Tim Henderson had 16, including 5-of-6 free-throw shooting in the fourth. Dan Osborne chipped in with 12.

Les Adams had a game-high 32 points for Southall, which had just four scorers.

Gateway will play in the championship game today against Stanleytown Baptist, which defeated Granite Christian 57-46 in Friday night's other game. Stanleytown and Gateway split in their two previous meetings this season.

The winner will represent the Southwest Region at the ODACS state tournament in Richmond.

Terrance Dibble and Ron Swan each added 14 for Buckingham County (10-8, 10-8). Jason Crist led Jefferson Forest (8-10, 8-10) with 18 and Brian Jennings had 12.

\ MONETA - The Governors controlled the even quarters as they handed the Golden Eagles a Seminole District loss.

Nelson County (17-1, 17-1) outscored Staunton River by seven points in both the second and fourth quarter. Herbie Elcox had 24 points and Darnell Briggs and Troy Brown 14 each for Nelson.

Brian Johnson led all scorers with 27 points for the Golden Eagles (5-12, 5-12). Brian Woodford had 11 and Keith Childress 10. NELSON COUNTY (68)

\ BRISTOL - The Scarlet Hurricane clinched a tie for the Highlands District title with a come-from-behind victory.

David Keith had 18 points and Shannon Archer 13 for Marion (16-2, 8-1). The Scarlet Hurricane outscored the Bearcats 24-14 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

Virginia High (6-10, 2-7) got a game-high 24 points from Robbie Howard.
