Derek Loyd scored off a pass from Bobby Prince with eight seconds left to snap a tie and give the Cavaliers a 76-74 victory. Prince then stole the inbounds pass to seal the verdict as Lord Botetourt improved to 14-3 overall, 3-3 in the district.
"I knew Bobby [Prince] would penetrate and make something happen," said Loyd, who finished with 14 points.
Prince said he was lucky to find Loyd under the basket.
"We were running our spread offense," he said, "and Coach [Don] Meredith said to keep the ball in the middle. But I got caught on the wing, and when I finally was able to drive to the basket, I got shut off. Luckily, I saw Derek and was able to get the ball to him."
"I heard a biblical statement on the radio this morning," Meredith said. "The words were `Thou must alter thy routes' and that's exactly what Bobby was forced to do cause his route was cut off. [Byrd was] really keying on him as most teams do and, fortunately for us, that left Derek all alone."
Byrd (7-11, 0-7) trailed most of the way and was 10 points behind late in the third quarter before it began to peck away at Botetourt's lead. The Terriers caught up on a stickback by Matt Reynolds to make it 68-68 with a little less than four minutes left.
Botetourt then went in front on a driving layup by Prince and appeared in control when it increased the lead to 74-71 with 52 seconds remaining. With 37 seconds left, Chad Wade made a 3-point goal to tie the score.
Botetourt ran nearly 30 seconds off the clock before Loyd's winning shot.
Lord Botetourt played without 6-foot-4 freshman center Jeff Conise, who was sidelined with an ankle injury. His absence enabled the Terriers to dominate the rebounding 36-19.
"But they really hustled and outran us up and down the floor, particularly in the first half," William Byrd coach Paul Barnard said. "I thought we did a better job in the second half and eventually the game came down to our turnovers and free-throw shooting."
The Terriers had 17 turnovers in the first half alone, which Barnard said "is usually enough for a whole game."
