That's where the senior forward spent most of Friday night, firing up 3-pointers as the Patriots beat Cave Spring 95-77 and won the Roanoke Valley District boys' regular-season basketball title.
Anderson made 7-of-11 3-point attempts, most of them from that spot, on the way to a 30-point night in a victory that assured Patrick Henry of a return to the Group AAA Northwestern Region Tournament after a year's absence.
"It was something like that," Anderson said when asked if "X" marked the spot where he was hottest. "They were sagging off me, and I just shot it."
PH coach Woody Deans said, "We just wanted to swing the ball back. We thought we were in the right offense against their trap zone. We figured Troy would have the open shot, and he was hot."
Said Cave Spring coach Joe Davis, "Too many 3-point shots and too many rebounds."
The Knights were manhandled on the rebounding 41-20. Timmy Basham grabbed 11 rebounds for the Patriots, who also hit 31 of 65 field-goal attempts, including 17 of 28 as they outscored Cave Spring 57-44 in last two quarters.
Every time Cave Spring (11-8 overall, 4-3 in the district) was ready to mount a rally in the second half, Anderson would make a 3-pointer. Six came in the last 16 minutes and four of them in the fourth quarter as PH (16-4, 7-0) pulled away.
When Patrick Henry beat Cave Spring by a point last month at the Roanoke Civic Center, Anderson hit two 3-point shots in the fourth quarter, including a late one from the side that Davis said he would give Anderson every time.
"And I'd still do it," said Davis. "If we had gotten to him, he wouldn't have made as many [tonight]. But they've got four other bodies making contact on the baseline defense, plus they do a good job of running their offense."
If it wasn't Anderson, there was someone else. In the second quarter, Basham and Troy Johnson came off the bench to hit 18 of the Patriots' 23 points as they took a 38-33 lead at halftime. Basham, Anderson and Johnson hit the final five points in the last 1:32 that broke a 33-33 tie and put PH in front for good.
If there still was a doubt, Toby Webb and Anderson each made 3-point plays to open the second half, and the Patriots led 56-41 lead with 3:41 left in the period.
The Knights, though, refused to fold and closed to within 79-72 with 2:11 left on two free throws by Andrew Shuck.
Anderson answered with a 3-pointer. Then he stole the ball, was fouled and made his free throws to complete a tremendous game that included six rebounds, three steals and 9-of-18 shooting from the floor.
"This was my best overall game because I rebounded and got steals," said Anderson. "I felt my shot in the first half. And Troy Johnson kept telling me to shoot."
A disbelieving Davis said, "I don't believe he can shoot 7-of-11 every game.
"But the story of this game was also the last two minutes of the first half and first couple of minutes the second half. They outscored us 11-0, but it was fairly even the rest of the game."
Mike Fayed pumped in 21 points and had four assists for Cave Spring. Jeremy Blackstock, a 6-foot-4 senior, added 16 points, but he got only three rebounds. Other than those two, the Knights failed to find any consistent help despite shooting 24-of-41 from the field.
PH spread the wealth for outstanding performances. Though Troy Manns didn't score, he had a game-high six assists. Toby Webb added 13 points, including a pair of 3-point goals; rapidly improving Jonas Callis had 10 points; and Monty Anderson, Troy's twin brother, added nine points.
