Winners will be notified in the summer and the awards will be presented at a program Sept. 14.
There will be five categories this year. Prizes in the adults category, including graduate students, are $100, $50 and $25; for college students, $75, $50 and $25; high school students, $40, $25 and $10; grades 5-8, $30, $20 and $10. Certificates will be awarded to the top three entries in the grades 1-4 category.
Stories should be typed, double-spaced and not exceed 6,000 words. A complete set of rules is available by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to Sherwood Anderson Short Story Contest, P.O. Box 550, Marion 24354 or telephoning Don Francis at 783-7141 (office) or 783-8230 (home).
This will be the 15th year for the contest. A 1987 anthology of winning stories from the first 10 years, "Stories from Sherwood Anderson Country," is available for $12 from the contest address.
Entries in the adult category must be accompanied by a $5 fee. The fee will be dropped for entrants who buy copies of the anthology.
Anderson was a prominent American writer in the first half of this century. He lived in Marion and Troutdale from 1925 until his death in 1941. He owned the Smyth County News and The Marion Democrat.
Contestants must be Southwest Virginia residents or natives, or live in adjoining areas of bordering states. Stories should deal with life in rural or small-town America. - Southwest bureau
